English Dub Review: Space Dandy “Live With the flow, Baby!”

Spoilers Below

Space Dandy. Where he’s Dandy, in Space. I love how the characters (Dandy and his robot, QT) break the fourth wall, a la Deadpool. As their conversation rolls on,  Dandy is making his somewhat innocent robot increasingly annoyed about his obsession with tits and ass. They go to Boobies, for the giggly women and not so hot wings. Dandy’s mission is to visit every Boobies to see every girl who works there, and maybe wrangle up an alien.

Now we get a peeping tom cat alien taking pics of the girls. Dandy goes to talk to the alien, but he runs off, thinking Dandy is there to toss him. His attempt at catching him nabs him the different alien, but the cat slips, and gets trapped in a chair. So, we get a brief glimpse of one of the villains.

The narrator tells us about the battle between the Gogol and the Jaicro, but finds the goings on of the Aloha-Oy more important. We get a proper introduction to the Beetlejucian, and since no one can pronounce his name (and I can’t spell it) Dandy calls him Meow, because he looks like a space cat. Meow is trying to find a planet where there are a lot of unregistered aliens. Dandy, however, couldn’t care less, giving a stupid, yet insightful way to live.

Dr. Chao almost catches up with Dandy, until Meow decides to hit the button for the broken warp drive. They end up somewhere outside space and time, where they find a cosmic string. Dandy doesn’t heed the warning from QT, and yanks them back into reality. They end up outside of the planet Meow was talking about. Dandy and Meow get on Dandy’s broke ass teleporter, and after twenty seconds, teleports down to the planet. Dandy calls for QT to send him back, but QT ends up bringing back one of the aliens. The alien starts to tear the ship apart, so Dandy calls for his secret weapon, disguised as a Hawaiian surfer. He ends up vaporizing the planet, himself, and everything on the planet.

This show is fucking insane. Everything from Dandy, to the universe, to the narrator are all so far gone, and I love it. The bits where the program goes psychedelic just adds to the insanity. Dandy looks like he could be one of the most memorable main characters on Toonami. The enemies look rather generic though, at least right now. That was a little irritating, but there was nothing to force me  away from the show. This had a lot of hype, mainly because it looked so outlandish, not to mention that it comes from the creator of Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo. That right there should be enough reason to draw in viewers.

One little note, this is one of the very few times where autotuning someone is warranted. QT sounds so awesome with the overly robotic tones from Autotune. Dandy,Meow, and QT are here to stay, and finally bring some variety to Toonami. Speaking of Toonami, look for an article this week detailing our latest foray into the world of animation: Anime!
