Review: Red vs Blue “Theogeny”

The grand finale.

Overview:

In the labyrinth, everyone faces their own fears.

Our Take:

It’s the last episode of the season.

In their own personal hells, everyone confronts their fears or is helped out by someone else. Most significant is Doc, who ends up coming to an agreement with O’Malley, and unleashing his true potential in the process, and Grif, who ends up bonding again with his sister over the fracture in their relationship. The most dynamic one, of course, goes to Carolina. She confronts her old self, who mocks her for diverging from the path they set out on and squandering her full potential. However, to that Carolina has a retort, that she is glad that she diverged from her path. It’s because she’s changed that she’s found new strength and forged new bonds, and developed more in the process. She doesn’t crumble under her double but faces it head-on until it yields. Interestingly enough, Caboose broke free of his own prison by himself– we never do see what it is, but it seems that he never realized it was trying to kill him.

It’s Donut who ends up shining in the end, who ends up tricking Genkins, and letting him willingly walk into the abyss. How it’s set up works pretty well too- we think Donut is just orating and unintentionally giving Genkins the information, but that was intentional all along.

Chrovos’ origins are also revealed: she, at one time used to be Genkins. When Genkins went back to the start of time, still equipped with Chrovos’ powers, he proclaimed to be her, have become her. In that sense, that becomes true, for by existing as her, in the place she occupied, he assumes her role. As the Chrovos figure, he is then doomed to have the same fate as her, and end up being sealed away by the gods. He becomes Chrovos by existing as her origin, for something can’t appear from nothing.

Chrovos still ends up sealed up, as Washington returns to fix the original paradox, being shot. At the same time, he is fearful of what he inevitably has to do, but the rest of the team makes a decision to be there with him. He ends up being shot, still loopy from his brain being deoxygenated, but alive. For now, the stability of the universe seems to be in place- until the next season.

Altogether, a good way to wrap things up, and resolve a lot of the questions that were created over the season. Overall, I’d say I had a good time.
