Review: Red vs. Blue Season 13, Episode 1 “Prologue”

When we talked to Miles Luna last week about Season 13 of Red vs. Blue, he said that things got really huge. If “Prologue” is anything to go by, “got really huge” is the biggest understatement that I’ve ever heard.  That being said, “Prologue” is probably the most intricate episode yet. Everything here was CG, except for the tail end of the episode.

One of the first questions I asked Miles when we did the live interview was “At the end of Season 12, the Freelancer mercenaries are on their back heels. What are Felix and Locus doing so that they aren’t wiped out?” This question was answered as soon as Felix strolled out of the Pelican. “Prologue” was a chronicle of Felix taking some time out of his day, befriending the crew of a prison transport ship, and then killing said crew. However, the prisoners are a different ball game. There is so much going on, yet you don’t feel confused with where “Prologue” picks up. Season 12 seems like an afterthought after “Prologue,” that’s for sure.

That’s not necessarily a bad thing. Felix and Locus were left reeling after what happened on Chorus. Luckily, they don’t sit around and lick their wounds. That brings them to the ship, and who’s in it. For one, there’s Aiden Price. The now former Counselor of the Freelancer program, and he gives Felix and Locus just enough information to entice them to leave him alive. And that brings them to the second person, who I believe is a new. Nothing is said of him, but a lot is shown. He has burns going across the left side of his face, and a really killer shark tattoo going across his chest.

Let me level with you. This was the best season premiere from Red vs. Blue. Everything that was on screen was something that you haven’t seen before. The CG was so well done, I wasn’t sure if I was watching some sort of actual game footage, or if it was CG. I am used to the type of CG that you can tell is just CG, where it isn’t good, nor bad, just there. This was very different. The animators at Rooster Teeth did something really different and fresh here. Forget what you’ve seen, especially seasons six through ten. This is the type of CG-centered RvB you want to see.
