Review: Red vs Blue “Headshots”

Time travel, or not.

Overview:

Sarge decides to go into the past to set things right.

Our Take:

This time it’s all about Sarge, and Sarge’s inability to stay consistent. With his team of new recruits, he sets out on an honorable mission: to kill Temple and thus avoid all the problems thus far. Unfortunately, since the time machine, called the “Donut Hole”, has a limit, they don’t actually have as much freedom as they expected. The capacity overload ended up taking them not to the past– but to the present.

In the present, Sarge loses sight of his purpose when he encounters Jax and the giant setup that he has going. It turns out that Jax is continuing his dreams of one day going into acting by taking up directing. His next feature film is a reenactment of the happenings of last season, and everything was progressing relatively okay– until Sarge killed the lead actor. Now they’re short a lead actor, and the project still has ways to go. Sarge becomes distracted not by the realization that he’s in the present, but that he gets the chance to shine. His main thing is glory and possibly a glorious death in battle, but that’s become less apparent in recent seasons. It seems to be, and this episode is heavily pointing towards that- Sarge seems to want to do something flashy and attention-grabbing rather than actually following through on his words. He has an eternal fixation on military combat, but since he isn’t particularly good at it, he’ll take whatever he can get. In this case, it’s the lead role replacing the actor of Temple.

The attempt to do so goes fairly badly, because once again, while Sarge has the desire, he doesn’t have the talent. In this case, this includes acting. Unfortunately, Private John has more talent than Sarge does, and Jax becomes impressed by him instead. After witnessing this, Simmons gives up and decides to go along with the flow.

We finally hear the voices of the divine beings, which is headed by King Atlas Arcadium Rex. The group of beings, including the woman who blew up the pizza store, seem to be directly aligned with the main group. The group being thrown into the past and separated has actually kept them from being properly discovered, and so from being hunted down and killed. What the divine beings want with the group is still unknown, but it has to do with the fulfillment of some prophecy and a conflict with another mysterious being. There’s a lot to take in here, and more to come in future episodes. It’s still a little early to tell, but something is going on, for sure.
