Review: Our Cartoon President “First Family”

Can Trump channel his inner American to save himself during the Senate hearing?

Overview:

After a visit to Europe, Trump is starting to worry about his reputation as boorish, unsophisticated and embarrassing. But, you are who you are. The problem is, Trump is also preparing to testify in front of the Senate. Thankfully, Steve Mnuchin takes him under his wing to “Pretty Woman him up”. In the end, its Trump’s lowbrow connection to below average Americans that saves his hide.

Meanwhile, the Democrats are taking a whole new direction with their campaign for the midterm elections. Their new advertisements are focused on dragging Trump’s name through the mud as viciously as possible. But, an over-ambitious new slogan derails the whole thing.

Our Take:

First off, I am really excited that Showtime has married the new Our Cartoon President timeslot with that of Sacha Baron Cohen’s Who is America? As Our Cartoon President aired on its own earlier in the season it seemed to stand out on Sunday evenings. Who is America? is just the show to get you in the mood to watch this cartoon Trump try to make as much of a jackass of himself as Cohen’s guests do.

The “First Family” episode kicks off with some guesses with how the Trump-Putin summit will go in Finland. Possibly the best part of the show, Putin is just as miserable listening to Trump talk as the rest of the world is. The whole idea of this segment seems way more accurate than the two being best friends like everyone likes to think they are. And, suddenly, I am pumped that this show is back on the air.

This was surprisingly the first episode to really get down to brass tax on how Trump came into power. Besides the obvious points, such as Trump’s popularity with the lower class that seems to be fueled by his own natural lack of intelligence, there is a lot of commentary on the Democrats. To the point where they have to admit, their one job was to not allow this man to run the entire country and they failed to stop it from happening on multiple occasions. It all makes a lot of sense and makes the next couple of years even tougher to swallow. How much can we actually blame them though? When Trump became leader of the Republicans it seemed like a sure thing this dude would never win. But, that’s the world we live in. And all we get is this TV show to show for it.

Anyways, it was a pretty decent episode overall. Nothing that separated it from the rest of the series to make it one of the standouts, but at the same time this show has had worse days. Since Our Cartoon President has been on break Trump has initiated a trade war with my own country, your old friends Canada, which makes this stuff even tougher to watch. Unfortunately, it’s like the world’s biggest train wreck and everybody needs to look. So, I am grateful for shows like this and Who is America? because at least America can laugh at itself.
