REVIEW: Mr. Pickles Season 2 Finale

I didn’t see that coming….

Spoilers Below

Is Mr. Pickles a show that has little continuity and can be watched on a basis of the occasional random episode or should it be followed to fully understand the changing plot and motives of the characters? Until the season 2 finale, I thought I knew that answer. Now I’m left with the indecision to make a definite answer.

Most of the episodes stand on their own and have a few references to previous episodes that aren’t necessary to the viewer for comprehending the plot but help if you can recall the original occurrences. For example, the mafia crime boss who turned into Bigfoot; not essential by any means, but a nice nod to an earlier episode.

The season 2 finale particularly drew on prior events as there is the major reveal that [SPOILER ALERT] Steve, Mr. Pickles’ BDSM slave, is actually Grandpa’s  wife, Agnes. I assume that season 3 will give an explanation, as I’m sure that I’m not the only viewer caught a bit off-guard.

I like several shows that have minuscule continuity between episodes (ex. Brickleberry) and I like shows that have a surprising amount of integral continuity (ex. Rick and Morty) but it feels forced and unnatural when a show goes 80% of the time as a stand alone series- episode by episode, and 20% of the time in which the show expects you to have seen every previously released episode. Throw in quick nods to past episodes (another ex. Woody in the mental institution and giving outlandish stories that actually happened on earlier Brickleberry episodes when the doctors think he is crazy) or have one long chain that connects the show (ex. the overlapping galaxies that come into play on Rick and Morty);don’t try to connect everything on the last episode to set-up a cliffhanger in hopes that viewers will feel obliged to wait another year for answers.

The actual episode involved a young woman who has a thing for older men, and is continuously trying to seduce Grandpa, as he searches for the an explanation of the mysterious coin that he found near Mr. Pickles’ den. It was slightly above average, but used that cop-out of “Oh, you will HAVE to watch season 3 to find out the big unanswered question!”
