Review: Momma Named Me Sheriff “Sheriff and Roach” ; “Bad Parents”

Overview (Spoilers Below)

Sheriff and Roach

A new buddy cop comedy starring the Sheriff who teams up with a roach who has a knack of solving cases. When Bob gets killed right outside the police station, our trace for suspects leads us to a local dinette waitress in Gloria who Sheriff seems to take a liking to, but Roach is thinking there might be more to Gloria than pouring coffee. After a disagreement, Sheriff fires Roach.

Meanwhile, Dispatch scrapes Bob’s brains off of the road and turns them into a robot. When a recently fired Roach shows up, he gets squished, but not before jogging the robot’s memory of Gloria causing his murder. Turns out, Bob had an obsession with Gloria and Gloria’s grandma decided to exact revenge. Bob gets his revenge and then takes off with Gloria leading to a reunion of sorts between Roach and Sheriff. The duo take part in a car chase that sees Bob crash and Sheriff somehow manage driving with no hands.

Bad Parents

Tommy somehow gets pregnant which causes the youngin’ to be more irritable than normal. The solution? A talk show! Tommy and his dad end up on the show as guests in an effort to settle their differences. After a round of Goodman chucking chairs at everyone in the audience, Tommy gets kidnapped, and needs to enlist Sheriff to help get his preggo kid back. They get to Tommy’s bed side just in time to see him give birth to a frog. We learn that Linda’s been feeding frogs embryos which causes a litany of additional babies to be born which makes Sheriff super happy.

Our Take

Every animated franchise has done a talk show bit, and with daytime television ratings at an all-time low in terms of any real importance to speak of, it’s going to be difficult to continue to tow those lines in the foreseeable future. We get to trademark pathos of Will Carsola and Dave Stewart, rife with baby making, chair swinging, and Sheriff’s Agatha getting a ride on a chopper. But, for my money, “Sheriff and Roach” is the craziest thing we’ve seen from Momma Named Me Sheriff.

An early contender for best car chase of the year, we somehow managed to establish the Roach as both a capable police detective and a dear friend in a quarter-hour, all the while putting together a fantastic true crime case that ended in sheer Hot House fashion. Watching the Roach take the wheel and drive like a maniac was the funniest thing I’ve seen so far this 2021, and I hope it’s not the last we see of it.
