English Dub Review: Maria the Virgin Witch “Courage, Prudence”

For once, we get an episode of Maria the Virgin Witch that isn’t Maria playing guard over a village. For once, Maria isn’t showing how omnipotent she is by stopping a battle. There was no bitching from Ezekiel, because she was there for about three minutes. And the coup de gras (see what I did there?) of “Courage, Prudence” was that there was so little religious overtone, and that’s because of the lack of Ezekiel.

“Courage, Prudence” follows Garfa, and how his penchant to drink great volumes of booze will always get him into trouble. This week, Garfa bangs out the lady of a knight. It doesn’t end well, because Garfa is got his ass kicked within an inch of his life, including a broken sword arm. While this is going on, the church pits Garfa and the knight in a duel. Long story short, someone dies.

“Courage, Prudence” is the only episode thus far that Maria hasn’t done anything to interfere, even though Joseph wanted Maria to interrupt the fight. I actually think that “Courage, Prudence” was better off, because the earlier episodes were handicapped by relying on the tricks of prior episodes. This was a change that you shouldn’t get used to. Maria is the main character and all, and her interference is the backbone of the series.

Overall, “Courage, Prudence” was different. The focus was on a character that wasn’t even in the source material. Maria and friends were all pushed aside so we can see how the humans live, and it was only a matter of time before we were actually able to see how the humans were coping with Maria and her scheme to bring peace at all costs. “Courage, Prudence” was a break from the norm. And it was entertaining.
