English Dub Review: Lupin the Third Part IV “The Lovesick Pig”

“If you chase two rabbits, both will get away” – Ancient Chinese Proverb

Overview (Spoilers Below)

The Lovesick Pig is a very special blend of wine that is actually capable of making the people who drink it fall in love with each other. The thing is, there’s only a VERY limited amount of this special wine and it’s being auctioned off to a very exclusive “Couples Only” auction. Luckily for Lupin, he was invited by Rebecca AND Fujiko. If you know anything about dating, you know it’s damn-near impossible to balance dating two women at the same time at the same place – even if you’re a master thief. This episode is filled with comical mischief as Lupin tries to do just exactly that. I mean, this is a classic case of mixing up the needs of the two beauties while trying to satisfy both women at the same time, but with a special twist that only Lupin can add. While this episode isn’t packed to the max with action, it brings light to the Rebecca – Lupin – Fujiko love triangle, but that doesn’t mean that there isn’t a little bit of action sprinkled in the scenes. Of course, there is also a larger picture here that lurks under the guise of the wine auction but it is all addressed and executed very well.

To me, this is one of the funnier episodes of Lupin the Third that I have watched, and I found it to be extremely enjoyable. You know, Lupin should consider himself lucky to have both Fujiko and Rebecca interested in him. Obviously, in their world, Fujiko and Rebecca are arguably the two most attractive women in the entire world and they were both fighting over Lupin. One thing I thought was interesting was that while the two women were arguing with each other and under the effects of the wine, Fujiko accused Rebecca of never having felt “true love” for somebody. It kind of makes sense to me, seeing as that Rebecca is the type of girl who has had everything handed to her and taken anything that she has wanted that wasn’t given to her. This came back a little later in the episode when we see Rebecca’s thoughts concerning “The Dream of Italy” and her own history, which we are still completely clueless about. I also thought quite a bit about which woman actually would be a better match for Lupin if he had to choose between the two. As mentioned in the episode, Fujiko was more interested in taking the wine and reselling it for a profit – she’s motivated by the bigger picture of being a thief and realizes that even though you are a thief you still have to make a career and earn a living of it. Rebecca, on the other hand, was more enticed by the thrill of the heist. In my opinion, Rebecca has treated the life of a thief as a hobby or as something to do for an adrenaline rush, while Fujiko takes her heists very seriously as she is a career criminal. I will admit that for a while, I thought that Rebecca and Fujiko were going to end up falling in love with each other, leaving Lupin straight out of luck and love. I think that the two girls could make a great team together and due to their opposite natures, would have had great chemistry while pulling off heists. That would that have been freaking hilarious (and unfortunate for Lupin).

Our Take

In the end of this hilarious adventure in Lupin’s life, I was left with more questions about “The Dream of Italy”, this season’s big treasure. If you recall The Dream of Italy is such a big deal that Mi6 agent Nyx was instructed to “dispose of the parties”, should they continued to become more interested in it or gain any more knowledge of the mysterious dream. They really are doing a great job of building up excitement and intrigue regarding the Dream of Italy. I just hope that all the anticipation is worth it when it’s finally revealed what it is.
