Review: Imaginary Mary “The Mom Seal”

Maybe the show is getting better?

Spoilers Below

I’m pretty sure this show is confused about what it wants to be. In this episode, Ben asks Alice to help with his kids. He gives her one extremely easy job which is to pick Bunny up from dance class. That’s it. Alice makes a huge deal out of it and Mary does nothing but worsen Alice’s fear. I kinda thought that Mary was supposed to be some sort of Jiminy Cricket for Alice. She’s not. If anything, she is the complete opposite. I really don’t understand what her role is in the show.

Alice begins to do the right thing by asking for advice from a mom that works at her company. By actually following said advice, dance pick up goes amazingly. Until Alice accidentally runs Bunny into a mailbox and immediately freaks out to the point that she gets sedated while taking Bunny to the hospital. While I can understand being worried about how injured Bunny is, I can’t imagine any actual, logical adult calling an ambulance over the bump. If anything, she should have waited for Ben to come home and ask his advice. Bunny is his kid, after all.

In addition to the Bunny incident, Alice also gave some terrible advice to Andy. Ben wants Andy to learn how to drive but Andy is afraid. Since Alice is afraid of picking up Bunny, she tells Andy to let his fear lead him. Again, I don’t think any adult, much less one that runs her own company, would actually tell a teenager to allow fear to overtake his life. Who is this woman? Alice does make up for it by getting Andy back behind the wheel and taking him to take his driver’s test. Thankfully, Andy passes so everyone can just forget Alice’s “mistake” and praise her for getting Andy past his fear.

Then there’s Mary, who has zero value to the show. She doesn’t give good advice. She doesn’t really do anything except make Alice look foolish in public. You would think that, since she’s an imaginary friend from childhood, that she would at least give advice from a child’s point of view. So far, she is just a useless character. The show would be so much better without her.
