Review: Gravity Falls – “The Last Mabelcorn”

While everyone in the Mystery Shack was sleeping, Stanford had a dream about Bill. It turns out that Bill and Ford know each other. Bill wants to get the rift that Ford is protecting. He needs it so he can take over Ford’s dimension.

In order to protect the Shack from Bill, Ford needs three items. Moonstones, mercury, and unicorn hair. Mabel, who adores unicorns, volunteers to get the hair. Ford and Dipper agree that Mabel is the best option to obtain unicorn hair. Mabel calls her girls and heads out to the enchanted forest.

However, Ford isn’t quite so confident that Mabel can actually get the hair. So he takes Dipper down to the basement to Bill-proof Dipper’s mind. Ford hooks Dipper up to a computer in an attempt to seal his mind from Bill’s tricks. Curious about what Ford knows about Bill, Dipper hooks his grunkle up to the computer while he naps. Unfortunately, Dipper finds out just how close Bill and Ford were.

Meanwhile, Mabel, Grenda, Candy, and Wendy make their way to the enchanted forest. Grenda uses her deep voice for some magical chanting that brings forth the area where the unicorns live. Mabel, knowing that only an innocent can touch a unicorn, comes forward to get a lock of hair but the unicorn, Celestabellebethabelle, tells her that she is not innocent. This throws Mabel into a tizzy. She bases her entire self worth in being a good person and now a unicorn has told her that she is not. As a result, Mabel goes on a quest to become a good person.

Back at the Shack, Dipper finds out that Ford made a deal with Bill. Bill would help him make a portal that would give Ford the answers to all of the Gravity Falls mysteries. Of course, we know that Bill is evil and lied in order to get a portal into Ford’s world. Ford realized this when his assistant looked into the portal and saw Bill’s true intention. That is when Ford destroyed the portal.

As Mabel runs herself ragged trying to become a good person, Wendy comes up with a scheme to just steal the hair. The other girls make an agreement with a gnome to get fairy dust that will knock out Celestabellebethabelle. Once the unicorn is asleep, Wendy tries to cut off her hair. But Mabel rushes in to stop her. When Celestabellebethabelle wakes up and sees Mabel with the scissors in her hand, she tells Mabel that she is a terrible person. Unfortunately for Celestabellebethabelle, a couple of other unicorns come forth and tell the girls that she is full of crap. So the girls attack the unicorns.

Mabel and the girls return to the shack with their unicorn hair…and tears…and eyelashes. At the same time, Dipper and Ford make an agreement to never keep secrets from each other again. But will they be able to stop Bill?

I have to say that I really enjoyed Mabel’s part of the storyline. Granted, I thought it was terrible that the unicorn lied to her but I loved that Mabel doubted herself for a short while. I think that the audience tends to take for granted that Mabel is “the good one” while Dipper is willing to go to any lengths to do what is needed. This showed that Mabel can be badass and still be a good person. The Ford and Dipper side of the story? Eh, I’m not sure how I feel about the mysteries of Gravity Falls being solved. I think that the answers won’t be nearly as fulfilling as our imaginations. It’ll be interesting to see where they take the Bill Cipher story. I’m just not sure I want to go there.
