Review: Final Space “One of Us”

OVERVIEW (SPOILERS)

Lord Commander brings Avocato’s group to a prison where Invictus possesses prisoners to gain power, leaving everyone to be consumed except for Ash, who he sees potential in to train, even after he overpowers her and gives her some sort of weird carpal tunnel. Sheryl manages to escape and signal Gary to come get them. On the Galaxy Two, Quinn is told by HUE that the condition she got from exposure to Final Space will kill her in thirty six hours, but she wants to keep this from Gary. The Galaxy Two arrives to save everyone, but they end up needing to leave Fox behind, getting him possessed by Invictus. Also Tribore and his son try saving a market place from bug people, but causes problems by being himself.

OUR TAKE

This episode was a slight improvement over the last one, with everything feeling like it moved forward a bit, but it’s not without its own problems. Lord Commander continues to neither be interesting as a character or very funny as a comedic presence, with his main source of humor just being either saying something wrong or mispronouncing it. The “The Gary” followed by “It’s just Gary!” has NEVER been funny and it kills me inside the more they try to use it. So yeah, I’m not really looking forward to more of this guy being around. Nor am I thrilled about this new tiger kid character who is yet another role for Olan Rogers to do the worst bits of his comedy while adding nothing but another body to the cast. We didn’t even need him for Gary to find out about the new tricks with the robot arm. Actually, did the robots he got that from have that ability? I forget and I don’t care enough to look into it.

I’m glad that they’re finding something to do with Ash and further exploring her cool dark magic powers. Like with her, Fox, and Sheryl, I was worried that they would be dead weight after their development had basically wrapped during Season 2. Fox looks to be a casualty of Invictus, but if they could bring Avocato back from that, it’s probably not impossible for them to do the same here. Sheryl continues to prove useful and a bit of a wild card, but her heart is still in the right place considering she still manages to contact Gary. Actually, wait, how was she able to contact him when she didn’t know he had a new ship?

Also not really sure why we’re still giving time to Tribore when there are other things we could be spending time on. I don’t really talk about this show much with other fans, but I can’t imagine there are so many other Tribore fans that they warrant all of these non-sequitur detours. They literally do nothing but waste time. I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I actually miss KVN. And last on the “why is this a thing” list, why is Quinn hiding that she is about to die in less than two days? Besides the inevitable trauma that will cause Gary, it’s also going to derail plans a hell of a lot if she suddenly drops dead! Also, is everyone else going to end up with this sickness if they stay here too long? All these questions and more, next time!
