Review: Final Space “…And Into The Fire”

OVERVIEW (SPOILERS)

Thanks to Nightfall’s sacrifice, Gary’s group is able to free Bolo and enter Final Space to save Quinn. However, their reunion is short lived as they are attacked by Invictus and several Titans. One month later, the group is still stranded, but now has to face an army of possessed Gary corpses from other timelines where Gary was meant to die. On top of that, Tribore seems to be going into labor, which is a bit of a surprise given that no one knew he was pregnant, and they’re confronted by a planet towering Titan, who Bolo and Mooncake have to face together. The group is split up in the chaos, with Gary, Quinn, KVN, HUE, and Tribore on one side, and Avacato, Little Cato, Ash, Fox, and Sheryl on the other. While the first group deal with Tribore’s pregnancy, the latter find a dying giant who has been infected by Final Space, something that Quinn is also facing but has refused to share. Ash mercy kills the giant, but the Gary corpses soon arrive. Thankfully they are saved by Tribore’s newly grown son, Quatronostro. But even THAT victory is brief, as Bolo’s fight ends up destroying the planet, leading him to believe Gary is dead. Thankfully he isn’t, but he and Quinn awaken to a surprising sight: Earth.

OUR TAKE

Final Space has finally returned to television after a year and a half away. As one of the lone survivors of TBS’ doomed animation line up, it is a bit heartwarming to see it enduring and even thriving at its new on home on Adult Swim. Covering this also gave me reason to finally go back and finish Season 2, which I had oddly never quite gotten around to, having always stopped at the end of Episode 10 during each run through for some reason. I have mixed feelings about that season, though different than my mixed feelings about the first. Specifically I think it was kinda weird that the show essentially got soft rebooted into an Infinity Stone hunt, as well as not really caring for Avocato being brought back from the dead when his death was one of the main highlights of the first season, but he’s here now so we should see some good utilization of him in the cast. At least, I hope so.

Now then, onto this episode in particular. After two seasons hyping up the horrors of Final Space as this den of unfathomable terrors and horrors, we’re finally spending a season within it, and I would say it is living up to the hype so far. We’ve seen weird and creepy sci-fi stuff in this show before, but not on the level or scale of seeing two Titans fight, nor running away from demon possessed corpses of our main character from alternate timelines. Not that the alternate timelines aspect is really made use of here, but there’s room to expand on that in future episodes. Meanwhile, glad to see Bolo actually be put to good use instead of just an exposition fairy in a box, as well as that he seems to be taking Mooncake under his wing, which should give him some long overdue character development on his strange existence, which I don’t think was really utilized very well last season. And then there’s Tribore and his new son, who I don’t really know how to feel about. Tribore was a major annoyance for more in how much time he took up last season so maybe he’ll have some better use here, but it’s hard to say. Frankly I think they should just kill him off and be done with it. Either way, a good start to the season! Let’s hit it.
