Review: Family Guy “Love Story Guy”

Overview

The guys recount their first true love stories, leading to parodies of “Castaway,”(Quagmire) “Dirty Dancing” (Joe) and various Meg Ryan rom-coms(Peter). Cleveland gets left out in the most predictable way possible.

Our Take

We literally just did a whole insight piece on Cleveland needing to get more screen time now that Arif Zahir is the voice of Cleveland Brown so I won’t delve back into that pool all that much. Everyone knows how I feel about the anthology episodes of Family Guy, we’ve already done two this season, only this one gets a bit of an alteration by taking place at the Clam as opposed to at home, so none of the bits get to see the entirety of the Family Guy cast transformed into movie role bits, just the guys minus Cleveland.

There were some funny punchlines to be had. Lots of football jokes during the “Castaway” parody followed up with Joe’s take on “Dirty Dancing” which was rife with light anti-Semitic humor that actually was maybe the funniest of the three stories in terms of dialogue, and whatever the hell Peter’s mess was which was a bit all over the place and didn’t make sense given the purpose of the episode. We did get some really funny cutaway gags, but unfortunately, only two were showcased, but they were still pretty good.

A very much by the numbers parody from Family Guy written by Patrick Meighan who has a knack for these types of episodes like ’80s Guy which premiered last year, but overall, this week’s 400th produced episode of Family Guy was very mid at best. Here’s hoping with the month-long break, the show can finish its 21st season on a high note with a tad more variety given that there are only nine episodes left in the season.
