Review: Durarara!!x2 “No One Knows What the Future Holds”

durararax2 ep 5

It seems that Durarara!!x2 is going to run with the Quentin Tarrantino lesson in chronology, because the writers are giving us stories all out of order again in “No One Knows What the Future Holds.” That is more prevalent when Shizuo kicks the shit out of Chikage, because the Shizuo’s telling the story, and it’s essentially a flashback. As confusing as it is, I’m still digging how the story is being conveyed, for the most part.

Speaking of Chikage, he does a fantastic front kick to this guy who stole from a store. You don’t really see it when Tom says it, especially when you see the before. As “No One Knows What the Future Holds” progresses, it seems as though the story keeps on going in a more linear path, probably because the episode is starting to wind down. The scene comes back to Shizuo and Tom, and he gets jolted by a girl who wants Shizuo dead.

The only thing I have to say about this is that the writers, both from the manga and the show, need to pick a side of the fence, and stick with it. Numerous times throughout the episode, I have to second guess when the events were going on chronologically. It’s nit-picking again, but it’s a pain having to second guess every scene.

I didn’t really understand what Tom and and Shizuo’s deal was when they were first introduced. However, “No One Knows What the Future Holds” is really their coming out party. A lot of the episode was devoted to them, and their escapades over about 18 hours. Hell, when they’re given more than a total of three minutes of screen time, they can actually hold the show together. “No One Knows What the Future Holds” is a mixed bag, but it isn’t a bad episode. It’s just confusing if you’re not used to it. Luckily, Hulu lets you go back and forth on the slider to rewind.
