Review: Ducktales “The Phantom and the Sorceress!”

Overview

When a mysterious magic thief arrives in Duckburg, Lena must confront her past and begrudgingly team-up with her treacherous aunt, Magica.

Our Take

While the whole “F.O.W.L.” storyline remains ongoing within the current season itself, the heart of this episode deals with Lena (Kimiko Glenn) and her magical hang-ups That both Webby and Violet wish to help her with, Primarily because Lena is a magical being who originated from Shadow-energy and her powers don’t exactly have an off-switch. In past episodes, Lena has struggled to be her own person and distance herself from her Aunt Magica (Catherine Tate), and now begrudgingly needs her help as Lena is faced with a whole new crisis.

A magic-hunter/F.O.W.L member by the name of the “Phantom Blot” (Giancarlo Esposito/Breaking Bad) wants to indiscriminately destroy all magic with an Infinity-Gauntlet looking glove and obviously has good reason on hating Magica. But consequently, this poses a problem for Lena herself since the Blot could also jeopardize her existence. I also find it weird that Gladstone Gander is in the mix, who is obviously Donald’s longtime Rival, but his purpose in the story kinda makes sense as we learn that his extreme luck powers are a type of magic that he wants restored being the over-privileged douche that he is and the stuff that happens to him excels in humor.

Above all, the episode is well-paced, full of energy, and decent action scenes. also without giving too much away, Lena goes through a substantial change as a character. Hopefully, this change will become essential later on down the road with what could happen when the Scrooge’s family eventually comes face to face with “F.O.W.L. in future episodes.
