Review: Doomsday Brothers “Boomsday Brothers”

Overview:

The ranks of St. Zephyr are getting restless with their rationing and lack of supplies. The town needs new leadership, and they find it in Suzette. Surprisingly, she is effective and manages to support the town, especially when Gabe and Rafe find a tanker full of gas. More unexpectantly, the vehicle also brings an overgrowth of foliage that creates sandwiches.

Unfortunately, when the townspeople begin trying to kill each other their new food supply seems to be the culprit. Gabe and Rafe will have to help their new leader if they hope to stop their friends from murdering one another.

Meanwhile, Judith is going all-in with her latest attempt to escape. This time arming a functioning nuclear device in the centre of the bunker. But as AENUS and her both try to bluff one another; time is quickly running out on them.

Our Take:

With only a few episodes left in the first season of Doomsday Brothers, they have just released their best story for establishing the entourage of supporting characters. All the citizens of St. Zephyr are present for this piece. And we learn more about their individual fears and goals than in any story before.

Honestly, this episode would have better served the fans at the beginning of the season.

Isolated in the town, the story gives screen time to all the beloved side characters without outside intervention. Additionally, with paranoia running amok, this was the best device to teach us about what makes the individuals tick. Something that took the show a few episodes to accomplish, and it could have been done with this one piece at the start of the season.

That is not to say that this addition to the series doesn’t hold its place. The fact that we know these characters now makes the episode that much more enjoyable. Especially when we get to see players like Veejay and Father Manila, who don’t always appear, intermingle with the rest of the gang. And by that, I mean, try to kill one another.

Though this episode did not offer much in the way of the ongoing plot throughout the season, it does show that things are coming to a breaking point.

Judith is losing her mind more than ever. Not in the idea that she pulled out a nuclear warhead. She could have easily tried that little tactic at any time. But the bond that she and her AI captor have developed is becoming something much deeper. Almost romantic. Which is sure to cause some friction. Especially when Judith is presented with everything that she has been fighting for.

Meanwhile, things in St. Zephyr may be worse than ever. After the catastrophe that concludes this episode, it could be the lead-up for significant changes. Rations and supplies are scarcer than ever before, and the town may have just burned down. It may be time for the townsfolk to start thinking about long-term plans.

Regardless of how this episode effects things progressing forward, the season only has three episodes left. We are in the endgame now. It is time to pay forward many of the promises served throughout the run. Many ongoing plots can be carried forward for a potential second season. However, there are sure to be some significant events to cap off year one.
