Review: Corner Gas Animated “Squatch Your Language”

The hunt for Sasquatch takes place in Dog River, Saskatchewan.

Overview:

The residents of Dog River get into a debate over sasquatch and whether it is fictional or not.  Brent is a big believer, which leads to Wanda and Hank with the brilliant idea to prank the gas station owner.  Unfortunately for them, Brent is two bigfoot steps ahead of them and has them create an even more elaborate hoax.  Lacey has been holding onto her own secret involving Sasquatch that has Brent questioning reality.

Meanwhile, Sgt. Davis and Emma are becoming obsessed with “Throne Strife” a Game of Thrones-type fantasy franchise.  As the two characters bond over their appreciation for the series, it leaves their partners Karen and Oscar to learn to get along. While Davis and Emma spend their days constructing cosplay costumes for an upcoming convention, Oscar teaches Officer Karen the art of being a crank.

Our Take:

Whether you are a believer in Sasquatch or not, you are bound to find the humour in the latest episode of Corner Gas.  The start of the show had me busting my gut in laughter with the bigfoot theories like “Sasquatch can’t use Tinder his photo would be too fuzzy.”  This was also my first time witnessing an epic battle between bigfoot and a unicorn, which surprisingly could go either way.

The “Throne Strife” storyline was an excellent commentary on people’s obsessions with shows like Game of Thrones.  They made some persuasive arguments about how ridiculous some fanatics can be with their favourite shows.  And I thoroughly agree with Sgt. Davis that a show like that cannot be fully appreciated without reading the books first.

Although there were some decent jokes involved, I found the side plot between Oscar and Officer Karen unnecessary.  I understand that the original series featured all six main characters sharing as much screen time as possible.  However, I think having these many contrasting storylines in a 20+ minute episode makes the show too crowded.  There is nothing wrong with having this many prominent characters, but the animated series could use a little trimming of how much they are all involved in per episode.

With that all said, I think this was another impressive episode from the Canadian series.  If they continue to deliver this caliber of humour and one-liners, then we could be enjoying Corner Gas for yet another long successful run.  Fans of the original sitcom are sure to quickly fall in love with this reimagining that carries the same magic as the earlier seasons of its predecessor.

However, I have to argue; whether you are a believer or not, Sasquatch wouldn’t be going anywhere near the endless fields of Saskatchewan. The animal clearly belongs in the Canadian Rockies.
