Review: Corner Gas Animated “Shelter Skelter”

It’s time for Dog River to get ready for a natural disaster!

Overview:

After Hank watches a scary movie called “Hippo-thermae” paranoia over the apocalypse takes over the town. Mayor Fitzy agrees to work on a new emergency preparedness plan and enlists the help of the town folk. Hank and Oscar get to work on a secret emergency shelter and begin stocking up on all the necessary equipment. Karen and Davis start arguing over who would be a better-suited leader in an apocalyptic situation, while Wanda pins the two cops against each other she secretly wants the position.

Meanwhile, Lacey and Brent have been arguing quite a bit. Helen takes it into her own hands and decides to lock them both up in her cellar until they learn to communicate. The only problem is, they don’t have any trouble communicating- so, they are just locked up. At least Lacey learns a valuable lesson about relaxing while Brent learns his own lesson about eating spoiled peaches.

Our Take:

The hands-down best part of this whole episode was the small clip at the beginning featuring the fictional film “Hippo-thermae”. A rip-off of Sharknado, the satire involves a frozen beach being tormented by vicious hippos. The small clip had me in more hysterics than the rest of the episode- not to say the rest of the show was terrible.

Surprising that Dog River did not have an emergency preparedness plan in place already. More surprising is that the series has never faced this theme before. Everyone deals with the situation fittingly to their characters. Oscar and Hank may not have a need to cross paths often, but you could totally see both of them getting crazy over the apocalypse. While Wanda always plays the best background villain- it is when her character shines.

Besides that, the Brent-Lacey storyline was unnecessary and slowed the episode down. Again, and I know I have mentioned this a few times now; they are trying way too hard to fit all these characters into each episode. These are established players that we already know and love; it is alright to make one of them the primary protagonist each episode. If they had cut out the pair’s scenes, this show would have been a home run. Unfortunately, they kept pulling us away from all the fun apocalypse stuff.
