Review: Corner Gas Animated “Float Your Vote”

Overview:

It is time for the annual Dog River Days celebrations. And with no one taking charge the responsibilities land on Lacey’s shoulders. As she stresses out about everything that needs to be done, she delegates duties to all her friends.

Brent lands the gig of building a float to represent Corner Gas and The Ruby in the big parade. However, when Lacey struggles to wrap her head around his design she secretly gets Oscar to build her another.

Wanda is assigned to landing a sponsorship for the day’s events. When things fall apart Wanda’s unorthodox approach may pay off.

Parade marshal duties land on Davis, but after a mishap while cleaning the police car, he may be in some hot water.

Meanwhile, Emma and Hank are competing against each other in the Dog River beauty pageant. Karen attempts to coach them both, but if they work together, they may both get what they want.

Our Take:

Dog River Days is a major event for Corner Gas. The annual festival has made multiple appearances within the franchise and is one of the few reoccurring themes of the series. More surprisingly, the fictional event came to fruition. In 2014, the township of Rouleau, Saskatchewan, hosted the event as a commemoration to the series that was filmed in their small rural town.

Fans of the show now that whenever Dog River Days comes up that we are in for a special episode. And the third season of Corner Gas Animated does not disappoint in keeping up the tradition.

Most Corner Gas episodes have split plots that don’t align until the final moments of the show. The formula works to set up hilarious moments and keep everyone busy. However, this episode does a reverse, offering one goal at the beginning and having the characters disperse to their individual plots from there.

The bonus to this writing style opened the doors for characters like Brent and Wanda to branch off and do their own things. While cast members that do not get much chance to interact were able to find some screen time together like Hank and Emma. Dog River Days opens the doors for things to make some shifts.

Brent was able to shine through giving him a creative project that he is bound to go overboard with. His float design by the end was hilarious and delivered some of the best one-liners of the episode.

Meanwhile, Wanda got to go all out herself. She also interacted with this week’s special guest star Jason Priestley. Honestly, it is a bit surprising that the Canadian actor from Beverly Hills, 90210 has not made an appearance in Dog River up until this point.

Of course, despite all the chaos Dog River Days goes on without a hiccup. And the results are one of the better episodes thus far in the season.

Saying that it is still early in the year and there are much more adventures to happen in Dog River before the season finale. But this episode featured some great moments including a giant peeing Sasquatch and a stunt devil Brent.
