Review: Blark and Son “Son Swap”
Overview (Spoilers Below):
After seeing Stacey and Junior arguing with each other, Blark suggests that they do a son swap. Junior hangs out with Blark, while Son hangs out with Stacey.
Our Take:
After yesterday’s episode, you would think that the show couldn’t get any more depressing than Son’s surprising breakup with Regina. You haven’t seen what today’s episode of Blark and Son has to offer. While it didn’t involve Son attempting to win back Regina, it referenced this unfortunate event in a couple of scenes. It focused on Blark’s crazy scheme to fix Stacey and Junior’s relationship so he can go back to treating it like a sitcom. The son swapping episode is an amusing misadventure that may not be as hilarious as Blark and Son’s previous outing but had enough puppet weirdness to compensate. It followed a similar pattern from the last two episodes. It started as a typical filler episode only to wind up being something that may be a part of a bigger story arc for Season 2. In this case, Junior revealed his tragic backstory to Blark using drawings and rocks as a visual storytelling form. It turns out that Stacey adopted Junior, and the wolves killed his real family. If that’s not a depressing backstory for a kid this young, I don’t know what is. I thought the way the show portrayed this sequence without dialogue was nicely-handled and almost heartbreaking. Amid the show’s raunchy comedy and wackiness, I’m still pleased to see that the writers took the time to provide some depth into the characters, especially the ones in supporting roles. The episode’s humorous moments got me giggling, such as Stacey offering Son some wine and Blark and Junior acting like cave dwellers. They didn’t make me laugh out loud as much as I did with the date night episode, but they were entertaining regardless. The son swap episode was a nice little breather from Son’s breakup. Well, until I got to Junior’s backstory. It would be interesting to see whether it will play an essential role in future episodes.
