Review: Blark and Son “Clever Blark”

Brb, crying until Wednesday.

Overview (Spoilers Below)

This episode is another Son-centric episode, in which we get to see him overcoming his fears and working up the courage to tell his crush, Regina, how he feels. We also get to see more of Fletch in action, as he tries to foil Blark’s attempts to ‘help.’

The episode starts with son in his room, rehearsing how he’ll tell Regina how he feels. It’s a heartfelt and sincerely relatable moment, as Son pours his feelings out into the air. Blark is told in no uncertain terms, that he must not interfere with the planned exchange, which will happen later that night. Blark agrees, saying that certain milestones, a man must face alone.

We then learn that Fletch (still living in Son’s closet) has taken it upon himself to prevent Blark from interfering with this process, and will be in charge of keeping him docile during the evening. However, Blark is clever, as the episode title suggests, and slips easily from Fletch’s clutches. The fight’s not over yet.

Regina arrives and is mostly oblivious to the romantic setting Son has prepared, and they sit down to talk. A rogue Blark has peered through the window and now feels an urge to intervene. Son begins telling his story to Regina, while Blark prepares to throw a rock through the window.

Just as Son is about to get to the good part, he is interrupted. Not by his father, though, by his (virtual) friend Zeke. Regina had built a makeshift robot to follow her and have a physical presence since we now learn that they are dating. Son is obviously crushed, and Blark is incapacitated by Fletch before he can cause any damage.

Blark and Son wrap up the episode with a heart to heart, in which Blark slurs out some solid wisdom through his sedation: what Son did was brave, and that’s what counts.

Our Take

This episode was light on the laughs, but heavy on the heart. As we’ve grown to relate to Son and Blark respectively, we’re on the edge of our seat to find out how this will go. All of us can remember the terrifying moment we realized we were about to place our feelings in the hands of an unsuspecting friend, to be crushed or elated. The episode does a great job of capturing the high stakes of early teenage love.

The episode isn’t all heavy though, Fletch is back to compound Blark’s own over-the-top manliness with his military vigilance in everything he does. Plus, having him around for the Blark-Son advice sessions is nothing short of hilariously inappropriate.

An enjoyable episode that felt too short! Catch the next release Wednesday on Go90.
