Review: Bigfoot “Endangered”

OVERVIEW (SPOILERS)

Numerous tourists descend upon Swell to harvest Bigfoot’s supposedly Viagra-like blood, with the only solution being getting on the Endangered Species List. This manages to keep the tourists away, so his other Endangered animal friends decide to throw him a party!…in order to drug him and take his blood for themselves. With this, many formerly near extinct species begin to repopulate in droves, leaving Bigfoot nothing but a Mad Max Blood Boy. Luckily Warren goes to the same agent Bigfoot talked to, who manages to cut through the massive herds of creatures who have suddenly become too numerous to be endangered. Now, Bigfoot is the only endangered animal left.

OUR TAKE
This week’s episode seems to be one of the shortest yet! And it shows, as the plot basically speeds through at a breakneck pace and sprints to the end without much time to really…be about anything, as it were. This sort of thing exploring the supposed (and later confirmed) qualities of Bigfoot’s biology should be something that warrants interest and expansion, but what it seems to be by the end is simply more reason for him to never have any real friends besides Warren (and possibly the agent whose name I cannot for the life of me remember). I mean, look at what we’re given: Bigfoot is attacked by deadly strangers, luckily able to hold them off, but the moment he explains things to the other animals, he’s strapped into an Eyes Wide Shut party and having his blood pumped! I know I’D never trust anyone ever again if that happened to me.

And now Bigfoot basically has a blank check to be a total asshole as long as he has government protection and pretty much every excuse in the book to abuse his privilege, which I doubt will land him any new friends. The dude has been a major asshole pretty much all season and really REALLY didn’t need any new reasons to flaunt his power or perceived authority. But I guess he’s always found his comeuppance in the end, so I suppose his newfound hubris can’t possibly last for on. In fact, the next episode looks to be titled “Last of His Kind Part 1”, which seems to indicate that this storyline will be carrying into the remainder of the season. Kind of deflates my hopes and predictions that Warren was going to turn evil and force Bigfoot to amend his ways in order to protect the forest and Swell, but I guess there’s always time for that in a second season.

But on the whole, this is probably not one of the better episodes. It certainly sounds like the start of an interesting idea, but doesn’t seem interested in fleshing that out beyond the ten minute mark. Not that I can really say what would make for a better version of this particular episode, but then again, I don’t really get the sense that the group working on this series were especially passionate about the work they’ve been doing. I might be off on that, but it’s the impression that I get, and therefore the energy I feel compelled to give off.
