Review: Axe Cop “Night Mission: Stealing Friends Back”
Spoilers Below
Axe Cop’s getting ready for a night mission and right off the bat meets up with ummm a Bat-Warthog Man. They team up to take on a mission and Grey Diamond comes with, and of course fly into space in their police monster truck to buy a dinosaur horn. Once there they meet up with Army Chihuahua whom tells us his stories of bravery involving ‘Chicken Head’ which lead to his beginning. The guys continue their mission in finding Bat-Warthog Man’s friends and lay a trap among a bunch of aliens until they get some answers. Eventually, we see the King of All Bad Guys and the group heads on inside, but get trapped. Its here we listen in on Grey Diamond’s story of how he created Liborg. Liborg shows up, frees the prisoners, and launches the dino horn. The horn causes a bunch of dinos to eat King of All Bad Guys’ brain, making him a good guy now. Unfortunately, Axe gets hit up on late fees because he returns the dino horn late to the store…
Adaptation…it’s a word that gets mixed feelings when talking about the transition from comics to any medium be it games (The Darkness), movies (Iron Man 3 sucked), and of course television. For live-action television this has worked as fans of The Walking Dead have told me time and again that the comics don’t always match up with the show. This is not the case with Axe Cop. The show FEELS like short web comics, constantly asking you to keep pace as it goes through cell after cell after cell. Also, if you have ever read any of the Dark Horse Volumes that have come out over the last few years you get a bit of a brief intro before you dive right in. Sort of introducing you to whom writes and draws the series and more importantly remind you that this whole deal comes from the mind of a 5 year old. Ever watch how the comics were made on Youtube?? The pace of the show certainly feels like that of Malachai, not JUST a 5 year old, but a very gifted one at that.
The characters are pretty well planned out in terms of voice cast bringing in a sterling set of industry vets like Nick Offerman (Axe Cop), but maybe my favorite was Grey Diamond’s portrayal by Rob Huebel (Children’s Hospital). Anyone a fan of the Venture Bros. and more specifically the actual Venture family will feel right at home with Grey’s personality and eccentric mannerisms that act as a nice complement to Nick’s take on Axe. Tyler the Creator did a rather nice job as Liborg and I couldn’t help but fall out of my chair listening to him talk. Vince Kartheiser gives Bat Warthog Man some legitimacy, but I felt like he was tad underused which could be just a side effect of the 12 minute run time.
The real star of the show as mentioned is Offerman. His subtle and endearing personality is a perfect fit for the man with the iron axe, as it comes with a contrast that is awesome when paired up with the sometimes fanatical universe of Axe Cop, the likes of which is comparable to say a Metalocalypse, but even more well…ADHD.

"There are also other characters that come and go (also owned by the Warner Bros. Discovery conglomerate media company)."
Huh. Is that just referring to other characters from the show itself, or is this implying that the new season is going to have cameos from other WBD IPs
