Review: American Dad ‘Faking Bad’

Spoilers Below

The Smiths are at Boobers (a play on Hooters, possibly the greatest family establishment) when Hayley runs into one of her old friends. And when she gets invited out for a night on the town and doesn’t have a fake ID, she turns to Steve (who made a legit-looking FBI aka Federal Body Inspector ID).

The ID is so realistic, the duo decides to start a business.  Steve takes a note from Breaking Bad and goes by the name of Guttenberg (Steve Guttenberg, not Johannes Gutenberg, who invented the printing press).

There are a few setbacks of course, like rivaling Kevin Ramage (Roger) and Stan hot on their trails.

Stan goes undercover as a pink lady, in one of the most hilarious montages in American Dad! history. With Fun.’s “We Are Young”, we’re taken through a narrative of Stan’s summer-of-love type scenario, with cherry stem innuendos in full effect.

Eventually, Stan catches on to Guttenberg and pinpoints his location. And before his big arrest, we’re treated to an exhibit of puns he’s been working on, like “You’ve Gutten away for the last time”, “Berg your pardon?”, “Cat Gutt your tongue?” and “You’re just too Gutt to be true…”

Steve convinces his father that he is innocent. And when he and Hayley have a falling out, Steve joins forces with Kevin Ramage, making fake passports for Russian gangsters.

It all falls apart when Stan and the CIA close in and shuts down the operation.

This is perhaps the most memorable episode due to that one montage of Stan’s undercover bit and the Breaking Bad references. Either way, if you haven’t seen this episode, you’ve got some catching up to do.
