Reddit AMA Recap: Kyle Hebert, Legendary Super Voice Actor, talks about his lengthy career in Voice Acting

A man who needs no introduction in the anime community with too many notable credits to count, Kyle Hebert was nice enough to do an AMA for Reddit to discuss his experiences in the industry, as well as playing some of anime’s most iconic characters.

On re-recording DBZ lines for Kai:
I love it when scripts are more faithful, plus Kai was a rare chance to showcase how much better we all were as actors. It was done so many years after the first dub and we were so much more experienced. The cast practically could direct themselves.

On how he got started in the industry:
I came from radio. Heard about audition opportunities in 2000, went in and tried out for teen/adult Gohan and some other roles. Two weeks later, Chris Sabat called me and said they wanted to bring me in to do some small parts. Then after a month or so of that, they gave me the Gohan role. Few months later, I took over as the Narrator and Ox King.

On his inspiration for his portrayal of Sosuke Aizen from Bleach:
Aizen is specifically inspired by the voice of the HAL 9000 computer on the movie, “2001: A Space Odyssey”. He is friendly, yet dangerous, and you aren’t quite sure if he’s trustworthy.

On missing playing Gohan once Dragon Ball Super is done:
I always end up missing Gohan a lot because he’s so rarely a part of the action so I cherish the little screentime he gets. On Super, I love the whole Tournament of Power episodes where Gohan shows he’s still got it.

On favorite characters he’s voiced:
Gohan is what jumpstarted my career, Ryu got me onto a Disney movie without having to be a movie star or celebrity.

On his proudest moment in his career:
Getting to cameo as Ryu in Wreck-It Ralph.

Dragon Ball Super premieres its last stretch of episodes Saturdays on Toonami.
