Reddit AMA Recap: Final Space Creator, Olan Rogers Chats about his Hit Animated Series

Olan Rogers hosted an AMA for many of his enthusiastic fans. He fielded questions about the show, many of which spoke to the differences between season one and season two. The atmosphere was refreshingly positive and optimistic as Rogers dissected the show that began life as a web series almost a decade ago.

On his favorite episode:

While he puts a ton of work into every episode, his personal favorite is season two’s The Other Side. It was everything he wanted the show to be, but the network hated it. Rogers and his team had to fight to get it made.

On the characters he voices:

The toughest character for Rogers to voice has always been Gary while Mooncake has always been a cinch. When asked who was the most fun to voice, he confidently answered, Tribore. While he understands that many people are “on the fence” over the character’s bizarre antics, Rogers has a lot of fun “goofing off” with him. Tribore is also is favorite character to write for. So fans better get used to that unconventional alien, because he’s going to be around for a while.

On getting notes from the network:

Compared to season one where the crew was basically allowed to do whatever they wanted, every episode of season two got slammed with notes from every branch of the network. And while he feels most notes improved the final product, he did have to make some compromises. TBS wanted more stand-alone episodes to better pair it with American Dad, but Rogers assures everyone that the back half of season two will be way more serialized.

On the return of Avocato:

Secrets often have to be kept to keep the audience guessing. And unlike live-action shows where pictures of actors appearing on set can be easily leaked, animation is a much better medium to hide shocking reveals. Olan Rogers had to keep quiet about Avocato for more than a year, but he’d actually been planning the large feline’s return since his death in season one, episode six.

On whether there’ll be a season three:

So far, there’s been no official word. But Rogers is confident, especially since this year’s rating are outperforming season one’s and he believes support is growing. However, even though the probability of season three is looking good, we’ll likely have to wait until late 2020 or early 2021 to see it. Even so, he has the third season “planned down to a T.”

On Little Cato and Ash’s “will they or won’t they” relationship:

While Rogers doesn’t think it’ll turn into a traditional romance, he thinks the pair will become really good friends.

On HUE vs. AVA:

He doesn’t think AVA is replacing HUE in any way. He wanted HUE to have a different story in season two, and while he loves him as the ship’s AI, the story took his character in a whole different direction.

On his future plans:

Rogers has a show in the works tentatively called Lion’s Blaze. Right now it’s the subject of a “tiny bidding war.” At the moment he’s not sure where the show will land or if it’ll even see the light of day. Eventually, he wants to write features but if he wants to pull that off, he feels there’s a long road ahead of him.

On his pets:

As a huge sci-fi fan, Rogers named his beloved pets accordingly. He has a Pitbull mix named Tardis, a cat named Starscream, and a Great Dane mix named Ridley, in honor of Doctor Who, Transformers, and the Alien franchise, respectively.
