Reddit AMA Recap: Dilbert creator Scott Adams

Scott Adams

There was really only ONE series in the entire history of The Simpsons that maybe challenged the series’ dominance on network television and that one series was the animated adaptation of Dilbert on UPN. The fucking show only lasted two seasons and STILL got a Primetime Emmy and with good reason. Featuring a cast of who’s who names like Daniel Stern, Kathy Griffin, Jason Alexander, and Chris Elliott, it was a crying shame when this show got the axe. However, the comic franchise in which the series was inspired by is still alive and well and I have friends on Facebook that still post Dilbert cartoons on Monday mornings which certainly helps.

Recently, Dilbert creator Scott Adams took part in a Reddit AMA and yea he answered a bunch of questions, but he took on a few for the animated series in particular. For starters when asked what Scott would have done differently if the animated series were to happen today, one couldn’t agree with what the creator had to say in what went wrong:

I wouldn’t have done it on UPN. True story: the writing budget was so small we asked the intern who fetched coffee to be on the writing staff just because we could afford him. He wanted to someday be a writer, so it wasn’t crazy. Still…

However does that mean Dilbert will never see the light of day in another medium sayyyyy film?

I wouldn’t do animation again. Part of the problem is that the characters are designed for print. With no mouths and no eyes, it just wasn’t optimize for movement.

I do plan to make a Dilbert movie with live actors. Someday. I have the story but need to turn it into a script before shopping it around.

So there it is…we will probably never get another Dilbert animated series, but that doesn’t mean Scott Adams isn’t still writing new strips. On top of that he just came out with a new book and you should probably get it because he is a stellar writer and his comedic-timing is just as on point in long-form print as it is in short-form.
