Deadline.com broke the story yesterday that the producers of the Sock Monkey comics and graphic novels, are looking to jump in on the animated film world. Deadline has noted that this is a play akin to LEGO and Paddington Bears where the feeling is that this franchise could appeal to kids. However, I’m not sure how much of the Sock Monkey work that Deadline reporter Jen Yamato has read, but be forewarned, not all Sock Monkey stories are created equal.

If you’ve read any of the Sock Monkey books from Dark Horse Comics, you know exactly what I’m talking about. Tony Millionaire’s creation, while friendly and not graphic or lewd in the slightest way, are definitely not kids stories. As a matter of fact, when you go on the Dark Horse Comics site, the store usually recommends the books for those 12 and up, and I think that’s a fair sense. Yes, it’s a story about a doll named ‘Uncle Gabby’ that comes to life and takes on all of these adventures, but there’s definitely a fine line. Ironically enough, not too dissimilar than the aura of Ren and Stimpy, an animated series that came on during the day but definitely had a more adult feel.

The Deadline article notes that the feel of this film would be more aligned with say a Coraline, and I can see that, but do NOT be surprised if this one gets a PG-13 rating. In any case, I really hope it gets picked up because the Sock Monkey franchise has way more heart than anything Hollywood has put out in the last five years, I can attest to that.

Watch a trailer below for what could be a Sock Monkey film which is also being produced by Matt Danner.
