HBO MAX Rips Adult Animation Heart Out Of Hulu With Adult Swim , South Park, And More

HBO MAX has announced a slew of adult animation acquisitions ahead of the upcoming release of the streaming service and Hulu can NOT be happy with this news.

As expected, HBO MAX has announced the acquisition of Crunchyroll, Hanna Barbera, Warner Bros., and Adult Swim programming, more specifically the exclusive streaming rights of Aqua Teen, Rick and Morty, The Boondocks, Space Ghost Coast to Coast, and Samurai Jack. For Rick and Mortythat’s the entire library of the show including the upcoming season kicking off on Adult Swim which is a model that will continue even when the streaming service launches in May 2020 for $14.99. New Adult Swim series will continue to premiere on Adult Swim linear and then be archived for HBO MAX. I’m hearing Final Space will be picked up for a third season which should be announced soon. The caveat is gen: Lock which will premiere the show’s second season on HBO MAX, followed by a stint on Rooster Teeth, then followed by an expected run on Toonami.

A HUGE acquisition comes in the form of South Park which will now call HBO MAX it’s new streaming home. The show will continue to premiere on Comedy Central for the next three seasons with the streaming premiere happening the next day after airing. All 23 seasons will be made available on HBO MAX.

Our Take

Hulu’s top two adult animated series acquisitions, South Park and Rick and Morty, have just left town and are now on a rival streaming service starting next May. This is by far one of the largest blows that the Disney-owned streaming service had been dealt.
