FLCL: Adult Swim Not Making Anymore After Shoegaze

Let’s look at what happened just last month. The FXX Network was just removed from the Spectrum lineup after Disney renegotiated there deal with the cable provider. The days of media conglomerates having 15 cable channels that each have only one new original per season are over. As a result, cable network budgets are going to shrink even further than where they are now and other companies like WB Discovery, Scripps, and others are all staring down the barrel at their own upcoming negotiations with whatever how much money is left over after sports rights contracts, WGA/SAG-AFTRA contracts, and streaming costs all increase.

From the looks of it, Toonami may be one of those casualties. Despite the fact that recently Adult Swim VP Jason DeMarco notes that a number of originals are on the way that haven’t even been announced yet, we now know that FLCL won’t be one of them after one of the networks’ leading producers had noted as such in a Tweet which seems to indicate that another Adult Swim original has bit the dust. That’s because, after FLCL: Shoegaze, and despite ratings success, it doesn’t appear that any new FLCL will be made in the near future. Moreover, this comes the same week we got the news of Adult Swim not moving forward with Pibby which makes one wonder what the future of Adult Swim is going to be aside from reruns of the franchise’s extensive catalog.

Earlier this year we also got word that both the DeMarco-produced Lord of Rings movie and Uzumaki had been extensively delayed. Meanwhile, MAX seems to be doing alright with originals with the very promising Scavengers Reign coming in the next couple of weeks.
