Final Space Creator Teases LGBT Representation Over The Next Couple Of Seasons

Final Space creator Olan Rogers is teasing LGBT plot elements that would kick off during the show’s third season and then be greatly expanded upon if the show were to get picked up for a fourth season. When asked about this on Twitter, here’s what he had to say:

It’s def. in there and it allows for it to be expanded on in a S4. If we do get a S4 there will be another character most likely, had to wait on revealing this another one since it made more sense to do it in a S4 plus it would tied in perfectly for the very very end.

Also anytime these kind of stories come into the fold it’s doing it organically & surrounding yourself with people that understand the nuances of telling those stories. We tried our best to do that S3 but the writer we wanted got a better gig so we’ll try again hopefully in a S4

Well it was mainly David and I discussing who should it be organically. David wanted one character, I wanted another. We did David’s this season and I think he did really great job writing it.

Our Take

There are a number of characters that get brought up as possibilities to come out with their gender orientation, but it’s Olan’s take on HOW he wants to broach the topic for the franchise that is the most impressive. Olan notes that David and he are largely the sole writers for Final Space season three, so a bigger writer’s room with different backgrounds for the show’s fourth season would be very much warranted and hopefully it happens. This is all tied to a possible season four pickup which, judging by how much marketing Adult Swim did THIS season, could go either way. WarnerMedia just made some executive shifts with adult animation being a core focus, here’s hoping Final Space can get a new and better life on a streamer.

Synopsis:

In the midst of working off a prison sentence, an astronaut named Gary meets mysterious, planet-destroying alien Mooncake, with whom he immediately bonds. But Gary doesn’t realize that his new sidekick is actually in demand by the sinister Lord Commander, who will do all he can to secure Mooncake’s untapped evil powers. This animated intergalactic comedy follows Gary and Mooncake’s adventures to unlock the mystery of “Final Space,” where the universe ends.
