EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: Jon Benjamin

We talk to Jon Benjamin, the star and leading man of Archer and Bob’s Burgers!  After the jump we get exclusive updates on any more touring, Chin Dildo, and  I begin to think my real name sucks.

FX was nice enough to invite Bubbleblabber on a call with Jon Benjamin where Archer’s star proceeded to tease me about my name John Blabber.  “Is that your real name??” asks Benjamin to which I said “Yes, I was born with that name” to which I get a “That is really good…Very convenient name. ”  Can anyone translate this for me??? I think I am being MOCKED! That said if anyone is allowed to make fun of me its Jon Benjamin and after our conversation I learned I’m not the only one who gets a bit of a teasing and I’m sure both cases are sarcastic observations made out of love….I think.

 

John Blabber: Are there any more plans for additional Archer live dates??

Jon Benjamin: If Matt Thompson, the Executive Producer, sobers up—maybe.

 

How about additional solo dates ala ‘Jon Benjamin has a Tour’?

 

Yes, I think I will do more of those, maybe in the spring.  I’ve just got to figure out a way to get less agoraphobic.

I don’t know if money is the answer.

 

I thought we were going to have a ‘Chin Dildo’ feature film this past winter?

 

Yes, that would be a good kick starter, I guess.  If we could get the funding for that, I think it would do well in certain portions of Asia.

 

So I actually had an opportunity to interview Dave Willis a couple months ago; a.k.a. ‘Barry Dillon.’  He mentioned working with exec producer Adam Reed.  He said: ” Adam is a genius.  I mean he’s like every time a script is like written it’s like I’ve  got to look half the words up in the dictionary and I’m sitting there thinking that I’m basically taking my college education in order to learn as much as Adam did.” Is that a pretty accurate depiction of reading Adam’s scripts for Archer??

Well, in fairness, Dave Willis is like a real idiot.  So it’s like it’s not fair.  It’s like giving a nine-year-old the script and asking him to understand the most basic literary references.

 He’s such a sweetheart, though.

 

Well, that’s why.  Aren’t all idiots like that?  They’re so nice.  They don’t know any better.  Well, Adam would like—yes, it’s true, I’m often asking about certain references that Adam makes in the show.  So when we record, yes; and I pronounced cuckold wrong.  I said cuckold last time, so there are a lot of words that are used that I’m aware what they mean, but I’m not sure how to say them.

 

(laughs) Right.

 

That’s like ?  I’m often worse with pronunciation, but I’m not an idiot like Dave Willis.

 

Well at least we learn something new every day.

 

I hope he reads this.

 

 He probably will.

 

Because if he does, it’s time to get some learning!

Jon had some other notes on the call for both Archer and Bob’s Burgers though to be honest I felt we were getting more questions about the latter. One of the more interesting notes for Bob’s is that Jon noted that the cast and crew just finished recording Season 3, and that for next season cast members of the FOX series will actually be writing scripts for the series. He tells Fred Topel with Crave Online ” Also, I believe that some of the cast members will be writing some episodes coming up, so I know I am.  That’s exciting.” And on what Jon would write? “Yes, I think it would be much darker, if I did it.  I haven’t figured out what my episode will be about, but I’ll go very dark.”
