Exclusive: Baby Blues TV Series Producer Clears Up Misconception About Show’s Second Season

Last week we wrote a piece with producer Toby Jones Tweeting an inside source claiming to have knowledge about the whereabouts of the second season of the animated series adaptation of Baby Blues. In short, Toby’s source claims that the second season of Baby Blues had never moved beyond pre-production. Well, after we posted the report, show/comic creator/all-around nice guy Rick Kirkman had this to say about just how much of season two was, in fact, completed:

First, Baby Blues aired all 13 episodes of Season 1 (first 8 on the WB) with a break between August 2000 and January 2002—the break partly because there was a change in animation studios and pretty much had to start from scratch on that part.

Second, Season 2 (13 episodes) was ordered, produced and nearly complete. All that was left was to replace the temp music cues and sound effects and possibly some minor editing. All animation was done. Full episodes like that exist, but I haven’t seen them. But my partner has. It is incorrect to say there was only pre-production work and not much more.

It is correct that they will probably never see the light of day. A lot having to do with accounting practices, since the second season was written off as a loss, as far as I know.

Baby Blues is an American adult animated sitcom, based on the Baby Blues comic strip by Rick Kirkman and Jerry Scott, produced by Warner Bros.] The first eight episodes of Baby Blues originally aired in the United States on The WB between July 28 and August 24, 2000, before being cancelled. The five remaining episodes that had been unaired finally did air on Adult Swim in 2002.

Our Take

So, there you have it folks! Toby’s source is, in fact, false and there was a nearly completed second season of Baby Blues, we just may never see it. But, this is why if you guys have questions on original series, come right this way, because we go STRAIGHT to the source!(or in this case, the source sends us a nice note)
