English Dub Season Review: Rent-a-Girlfriend Season Two

Overview:

A year after they met, Kazuya Kinoshita and Chizuru Mizuhara still regularly see each other through the rental girlfriend app. However, Chizuru confesses that she is ready to quit her job to pursue her true passion—acting. Despite wishing to maintain the relationship they have, Kazuya decides to support her dream.

Our Take:

Here’s the thing… I LOVE romance in anime and I even really like harem anime. They usually have to be done really well but they can still be enjoyable. Some of my favorite anime have harem elements in them. But one thing that those anime have over this one is probably the most important part. A strong lead character. There has to be something that draws every person of the opposite sex to them right? Some sort of magnetism, ability, or anything. But that is not the case with Kazuya Kinoshita.

Kazuya is such a whiny loser that I wonder how he ever got a girlfriend like Mami before the show started. I know Mami is supposed to be in the “antagonist” role but I kind of get where she’s coming from. I would start to wonder how this giant dumbass I dumped started getting all this attention from multiple girls all at once. But just because I have been around the block with anime I can guess how this one ends.

Chizuru is actually a nice smart girl so I don’t know what she sees in Kazuya. But I suppose that is part of the allure of the show, seeing how this trainwreck comes to fruition. I stopped reading the manga a while ago but I do feel like the upcoming arc is one of the best ones. It blows my mind that this has got three seasons when some really great anime doesn’t even have two but hey we know what sells. This isn’t the best harem, romance, or even seasonal anime but it must be doing something right. See you next season everyone.
