English Dub Review: Wise Man’s Grandchild “And So, Off into the World…”

And so, it’s finally over…

Overview (Spoilers Below)

Miria has entered the fray to try and teach Shin and his friends a lesson in pain. She comes in like a hurricane, blasts the young mages until some of them are knocked out of the fight and makes her leave, ending the battle somewhat prematurely. Sizilien, meanwhile, is off at a nearby church taking care of the wounded with a couple other of the Ultimate Mages. Shin and Augustus go to help.

Sizilien tries her best to help all she can, but her limited powers aren’t enough to save one man in particular. Shin, however, doesn’t have that problem, and heals up the man nice and easy. Sizilien feels bad that she isn’t as strong as Shin and cries on his shoulder. But Shin comforts her by reminding her of all the good she did for these people.

Later, back at the kingdom, Shin and his friends are debriefed by King Sweed about what happened. August then proposes that the two neighboring nations should make an alliance against the Demonoids. He rallies the rest of the Ultimate Magicians, who agree to go on a trip with him to make this alliance happening. Their friends and royalty wish them all on their way, and they depart into the sky.

Our Take:

I feel like I’m just repeating myself at this point, but there’s nothing left to be said about Wise Man’s Grandchild except that I’m extraordinarily relieved that it’s over, if only for the reason that this bulging vein that appears on my forehead every time I have to watch it will finally go away. This “Finale”, if you can even call it that, is little more than the dismal whine of a show that should have never been born and has yet to do anything in it’s 12 weeks of running that redeems it’s existence. This anime is the afterbirth of a genre festering under the plague of “Isekai” shows, and has about the same appeal to me as a swift kick in the chest. This final episode has everything you’ve come to expect from this show. It’s boring, it’s badly paced, it lacks drama or comedy, and the worst crime of all, it’s pointless.

You don’t get anything that you’d normally expect from a season finale in any genre. No major plot threads are resolved, for one thing, but we haven’t really had any plot threads to worry about up until this point, have we? Character resolution is non-existent, but again, this is because the characters we have are completely undeveloped. The only, only thing that constitutes a scene of some drama is the wailing of Sizilien, who feels just oh so terrible that she isn’t on the same god-tier levels of magical power that Shin, the ridiculously gifted self-insert character has achieved.

Everything else is just wasted noise. All the other scenes we’re forced to suffer through are little more than the show doing a little bit of homework so that it can sweep things away all nice and tidy. It barely even leaves any plot hooks that might interest a viewer in a second season. This leads me to believe further that this show is intended to be a one-season bomb that will only score a few extra dollars for the charlatans who put on this garbage.

Well, it’s over now. It’s all done, but there will be more shows like this that will come to take it’s place. The thing about isekai is that anyone can make them, so without a doubt this particular demon will come back again. Best now to just let it go and forget that this show ever happened.
