English Dub Review: Welcome to Demon School! Iruma-kun “Everyone’s Playmates”

OVERVIEW (SPOILERS)

The Misfit Class dives into their fun at Walter Park, including Iruma, who gets lost and meets Shiida, a soft spoken staff member who has fun with him before disappearing. Unfortunately, Shiida is part of the Six Fingers, a criminal group who wishes to revert demons to their old ways and running the park with the goal of freeing Kirio. The group begins their plans by unleashing magic beasts in populated areas of the park.

OUR TAKE

Well, it sure didn’t take long for the real plot to go into overdrive! Honestly, I think we probably could have gotten at least a little more milage out of the kids just having a lot of fun adventures in the park, probably with some character lessons and development thrown in. Sort of like Tales of Ba Sing Se in Avatar but instead at a theme park. Though while that would have been pretty neat, I’m at least glad we’re cutting to the chase after a brief tease with Iruma meeting one of the bad guys for the arc. The stuff with Kirio last season felt like the only part of the story with actual dire stakes, since it was actually about someone who wanted to change the world we had gotten to know into a more savage and evil place, so I’m glad we were able to get back to that for this part of the season. Happy go lucky school shenanigans are fun and all, but it heightens those all the more when we can get into some legitimately dangerous situations, not to mention it makes any future moments we focus on this group feel that much more risky and dangerous.

Meeting one of the members of the Six Fingers through a peaceful moment is not exactly an original plot idea, but I think it’s effective in setting some things up for later. Obviously we have long since established that Iruma is a very good boy who is pure and good and pure. He has turned the weirdest and meanest demons over to his side through sheer force of will, as well as the aforementioned being a very good boy. And having this scene with Shiida before the festivities get fully underway seems to be hinting that this is where things will head with her. Probably not enough to put Shiida in the harem with Clara or Aremi, but enough that I imagine she’ll be a major player in undermining the rest of the Six Fingers and their plan. Although maybe we’ll learn more about them and why they’re all a part of this. That would be cool, learning more about villains and their motivations is often potentially very interesting. Either way, it looks like this will be a pretty dang cool and eventful arc, so I am very much looking forward to the other four episodes that involve it!
