English Dub Review: Uzaki-chan Wants to Hang Out! “Uzaki-chan Wants to Hang Out, All Right!”

Overview (Spoilers Below):

Sakaki invites Sakurai and Uzaki bowling, which turns into a full-fledged Battle Royale. Ami schemes to get the two into sexy uniforms at the cafe.

Our Take:

It’s surprising that a show like this would find new life with its second season. Uzaki-chan Wants to Hang Out has a concept that would’ve grown more obnoxious and unbearable as the season progresses, mainly due to the characters’ annoying personalities. However, the execution of its out-of-context comedy and character depth helped make it one of the more endearing and hysterical slice-of-life comedies in existence. The show’s fans have been waiting to see the return of Sakurai and Uzaki after its season one finale two years ago, especially since their summer break is over. Now that it’s finally here, the wait seems to be worth it for the fans and me.

One of the best things about the show is the dynamic between Sakurai and Uzaki. Sakurai is known to be intimidating and aggressive, especially towards Uzaki, whose cheerful personality and teasing antics often annoy him. However, they tolerate each other on specific occasions, as they have known each other since high school. More importantly, they show some signs that they have feelings for each other, yet they refuse to admit it. That is unless Sakaki and Ami have anything to say about it.

The first episode of the show’s sophomore season shows that nothing has changed since we last saw the two potential lovebirds and their friends. The chemistry between Uzaki and Sakurai remains the series’s main highlight due to their near-perfect balance of charm and bizarreness. While the bowling sequence has its share of laughs, I would point out that the scene involving Ami making Sakurai and Uzaki wear explicit outfits was the hilarious part of season two so far. She even tries to have Uzaki’s mother wear one of them. Yikes! It represents Ami’s crazy desire for sexy attire and seeing Sakurai’s athletic physique aside from her obsession with seeing them form a relationship. I should have questioned Ami’s strange behavior, but I was laughing too hard to get to that point.

“Uzaki-chan Wants to Hang Out, All Right” starts the second season on the right path with its strong gags and charming scenarios. However, it will depend on how you feel about the show’s first season. If you’re not a fan of its concept, then you might feel the same about its second season since it offers more of the same as you’d expect from season one. I had a fun time watching the first season and this episode, so I’ll definitely be looking forward to spending more time with this frisky young woman and the intimidating loner.
