English Dub Review: Utawarerumono Mask of Truth “Beside the Iron Fan”

Overview

After their flight from the capital, Anju is poisoned, Oshtor is dead and Haku has taken his place. Now Haku must rebuild their army and protect Anju while keeping his identity secret from his friends.

Our Take

Even in their homeland, it seems Haku and the key-cast is safe. Coming into the show blind felt a bit daunting at first but at the very least, there was a recap that managed to help those new be up to speed that reportedly covers some content that’s a solid 10 hours into the story but it wasn’t a complete lost cause.

Although this is based on a videogame franchise I’ve never played, I’m at least intrigued by this universe after seeing the short recap of the previous two seasons and the reveals it has on what this universe actually is and how it functions.

Overall, I believe it’s a decent setup for the rest of the season. A lot of emotions were poured into the voice cast for this episode. I like that they didn’t waste time with too much recap as I think I’d have to watch the first two seasons a lot more for better context yet it ended with one hell of a cliffhanger.
