English Dub Review: The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel – Northern War “Gathers the Unpleasant Darkness”

Overview:

After the Erebonian Empire annexed Crossbell, Rogan claims that North Ambria will be next, but the government officials disagree. Meanwhile, Lavian is sent back to training camp as an instructor as part of her punishment for disobeying orders.

Our Take:

Now that we are two episodes in I’m starting to think that maybe this show will be a little more niche than I originally thought. There were a few characters and a lot of references in this that you would probably not understand the importance of if you have no knowledge of the games. I personally loved it but I can understand how seeing Valimar, Rean, and Campanella just doesn’t have the same impact when you see them that I do.

If you have no experience with the series then this is just typical anime fare so far. It’s not bad but a lot of corners are being cut just like in the games with a lot of characters wearing masks and helmets to cut down on having to create unique faces. I am definitely enjoying it but I would say tread with caution if this is your first foray into this universe. It seems like it might start to rely pretty heavily on knowing past information.
