English Dub Review: The Day I Became a God “The Day of the Trip to the Beach”

Overview

Hina has a dream where she hangs out with her grandfather. While everyone is at the movie-set, Yota wonders what going to happen once summer ends. When he expresses his concern to his parents, they reveal that Hina is actually the granddaughter of their mentor and that Hina’s father abandoned her. After Yota has a conversation with Hina about when she supposedly became a “God”, they decide to go meet her father.

When they finally track him down, Hina’s father and stepmother, whose names are Toshitoku and Isuzu Sato, are shocked when they see Hina in person. While Yota and Toshitoku are alone, Toshitoku reveals something about Hina that completely changes everything…

Our Take

Perfect follow-up from the last episode, but I’m glad we’re finally getting to the meat of the story now. We got to learn a lot about Hina’s situation and see her real father, but it seems like it lent some credence to the theory that the “world ending” is actually something completely different than what I was expecting. Now we know a little more context about what Hina is and what’s really happened to her.

It was also a nice touch to see Yota think nobody could see Hina. It was a nice way to break the ice and add comedy to an otherwise shocking and potentially bleak episode. You could make the argument that Hina’s dad is an absolute jerk, but he’s got a new family to take care of, but the way he tried to ignore his past daughter like that, is insane. The mother’s reaction towards Hina was also a little extra, but after hearing Hina’s father’s speech, I would say her reaction wasn’t completely out of line.

Overall an interesting episode that did well to expand on Hina’s past while also foreshadowing what will happen since we’ve now reached “04 days” until the end of the world, there are so many mysteries, that are slowly unraveled here leaving you to wonder about Hina’s current condition. And in a post-credits scene, the Hacker Suzuki is slowly catching up as well.
