English Dub Review: The Day I Became a God “The Day of Grand Magic”

Overview

Despite some of Yota’s friends and classmates having to struggle with their own inner-demons, Hina/Odin isn’t going to leave anyone lacking. She and Yota decide to team up to put a smile on everyone’s faces. But next is now a bigger challenge: Yota’s longtime crush, the gloomy Kyoko Izanami.

As her 17th birthday is coming up, it’s soon made clear that not all is well in the Izanami household as we learn more about Kyoko’s past and how it’s currently affecting her and her father in the present…

Our Take

Looks like this episode focused more on Izanami’s family drama including trying to get her father to be there for her. What’s interesting about this episode is a look into Izanami’s personal life and her family. It seems her mother passed away 10 years ago and was a kind person when she was alive. And despite Kyoko urging her father to visit her mother’s grave to pay their proper respects, Mr. Izanami has become a partial shut-in, working from home which leaves Kyoko is quietly frustrated with her Dad’s inability to move on. When Yota and Odin catch wind of this, they set out to try and fix it by any means necessary…

At one point, I was a bit concerned with a particular scene that involved destroying a videotape, it comes across as an overboard request given the subject matter of the tape and it’s sentimentality behind it, I mean c’mon how could someone ever destroy something so precious? especially if it contains memories worth cherishing. Jun Maeda the show’s creator has once again hit his stride, as this was a shockingly heartfelt episode.

Overall, compared to the random wackiness of past episodes, this turned out to be the most serious episode in this series. As somebody who’s lost a parent years ago, this struck a chord with me with how realistic & relatable the scenario actually is, as there are still people out there who still struggle in processing their grief, but the ending itself still felt the need to count down to “11 days left” which leaves me to wonder how any of this will factor into Hina/Odin’s claim that the world will supposedly end, as I’m compelled to keep watching to hopefully find out.
