English Dub Review: Suppose a Kid from the Last Dungeon Boonies Moved to a Starter Town? “Suppose Someone Told You They’d Do Anything for You, Which You Appreciate but You Know You Should Push Back?”

Overview:

Marie “rescued” Lloyd at the end of the last episode but really she was rescuing Alan. Lloyd would have accidentally killed that poor boy. Chrome notices Lloyd and Marie on the roof and sends Lloyd back to the cafe and bows to Marie. Hinting she isn’t quite all that she seems. Selen and Riho go to recruit a witch and wouldn’t you know they go right to where Lloyd and Marie live.

Mertophan has been using some curse to influence the king and his decisions. Mertophan wants war with a neighboring kingdom because of what they did to his village as a child. Turns out the king is possessed by a demon lord and was using Mertophan. Since Kunlun citizens can only get involved with demon lords and higher maybe Lloyd can help now?

Our Take:

Watching this show has become one of the highlights of my week. Writing the titles of each episode is not, however. I just look at it as another part of the show’s charm so I can’t be too upset. I think there is a little bit of something here for everyone so I really can’t recommend it enough.

This week I do want to do a voice actor shoutout. That is for Krystal LaPorte as Marie, when I look back on certain lines that had me laughing the most it was usually her that delivered them. I’ve made no secret that I love yandere’s and Selen in particular so when Marie comments on a yandere moment by going “What’s wrong with her eyes?!” it’s endearing. There were a couple of times Marie had some guttural screams as well and not since Goku going Super Saiyan have I felt as bad for a voice actor’s vocal cords.

Selen continues to be best girl and Riho best supporting girl. Honestly, them showing up at Marie’s house looking for a witch? Why was I not surprised? They were shocked to see Lloyd there but most of all Selen went into a yandere daze for a moment. If those moments keep happening they would have a weekly viewer in me regardless. Marie using the “hurt someone to protect them” trope with Lloyd was a bit underwhelming but we need tension somehow so I get it.

It looks like a fight is brewing next week, I was a little upset to find Mertophan was a part of the “bad” group. Usually, I can spot a betrayal a mile away but not this time. So kudos to this show for legitimately surprising me, doesn’t happen often. Though in this case, I wish it wasn’t true cause Mertophan had some good comedic moments himself. Maybe, he’ll turn good later or something. It’s anime so the possibility is always there.

We are only three episodes in and there’s already a demon lord so I can only imagine how they will up the stakes in future episodes. I know a lot of people might have just seen the title of this show and written it off as another poor light novel adaption but if I can convince one person then it’s worth it. Seriously, check out this show. Especially now we all need laughter and this show delivers that in spades.
