English Dub Review: Sugar Apple Fairy Tale “The Young Lady of Paige Workshop”

Overview

Anne is the only female artisan at the Radcliffe Workshop, but the cold stares aimed in her direction don’t keep her from jumping in to help with the hard, physical work. Then, Elliott, a silver sugar master, and his fiancée, Bridget, arrive…

Our Take

This time around the episode attempts to get topical as we have not-so-subtle themes of strong sexism with the standard racism against fairies in combination with a possible love triangle (There isn’t a will they/won’t they Romance story without one right?). Because some backward-thinking morons aren’t thrilled about the idea of women being silver sugar artisans, but Anne Halford “aint no one to fuck with”, as she proceeds to work twice as hard and Shalle working to service Anne, it’s clear that she doesn’t have patience for the mundane.

Keith’s depiction of Shalle through his sugar confection is marvelous, but Bridget using Shalle for her own issues, and Kieth making sure that Anne is well-maintained, this paints the love triangle trope that I was kinda fearing the show would fall back upon.

Overall, just when I thought the anime and the writing couldn’t get any worse, I was wrong due to the plethora of of misunderstandings and contrivances that this show has done in previous episodes that were small compared to this. At this point, the sugar contest is second now and their relationship is now first all to create conflict when it never existed. With two episodes left hopefully they’ll resolve this…
