English Dub Review: Star Blazers 2199 “A World I Once Saw”

A world we see today.

Overview (Spoilers Below)

Last week we caught Melda Ditz, a Gamilian, this week we let her go and learn that maybe people from Earth aren’t entirely innocent in the war against a race of beings that is essentially identical to us in every way except skin color.

Our Take

For the first time this season, Star Blazers shows it’s true colors in terms of the underlying pretense that is as important today than at any time in our nation’s history. It’s ridiculous that there are people in the world that judge others simply based on the amount of melanoma that is in their body which is really nothing more than the theory of evolution. This week’s episode excellently showcases that there’s not a lot separating us from other human beings, whether that be today or in the year 2199…it’s just terrifying that in over 150 years from now we’re still having this debate.

That said, this week’s episode offers a bit of action, a flash, if you will of the technical horsepower that Star Blazers has under its hood, and I’m curious to see what’s gonna go down with this Gamilan ceremony, but really, it’s a lot of morose dialogue that doesn’t quite keep you entertained, but it’s important to listen to because it links up with past and future arcs. So let’s count “A World I Once Saw” as a chore rather than sure-fire entertainment, a common flaw in anime that stretch 26 episodes.
