English Dub Review: Sorcerous Stabber Orphen “Draw Your Bow at My God, Apostate”

OVERVIEW (SPOILERS)
Orphen finally gets his magic back, but is no match for his opponent. Luckily, the dwarf kids arrive to give him a distraction (and kill the magic pope) so he and Azalie can gain the upper hand, but that too is quickly undone when Majic and the rest are captured and used as hostages. Except that ends up turning the tables on the bad guy anyway. With his last move, he disrupts the magical balance of that old nun being choked by the green hair lady and almost causes the apocalypse or something, but Azalie sacrifices herself to stop it somehow. Orphen is devastated by losing his foster sister but continues on his journies with Majic and Claiomh.

OUR TAKE
Ya know, we have shows on here that are popular enough that we actually get a couple comments from time to time, often disparaging me for having the nerve to criticize the show even when my reasoning is pretty sound. But this? I’ve gone through this entire second season with little to know idea of what is going on, not knowing some characters’ names part of the time (partially because it’s hard to find anywhere to look them up) and we’ve gotten zero comments about it at all. So, I think it’s safe to say that no one is really going to miss Sorcerous Stabber Orphen now that it’s done and over with. But for old time’s sake, let’s go over what worked or didn’t in this season (and likely series) finale. First off, nice fake out of making me think that Azalie was actually going to die at the end of last episode, only for her to survive and then end up dying anyway for a different reason. That was definitely a bit of a shocking swerve, especially considering the complicated love hate relationship between her and Orphen is one of the few things I could really follow throughout this entire show.

And while it was neat to see both sides bounce off each other with one trick after another pulled from their sleeves, it all ended up just circling down the drain when it inevitably needed to make use of the weird ass lore they had established previously. By which I specifically mean the stupid nun being choked out by the weird green haired lady dragon from behind a portal. Not only is that so stupid to describe, the one guy who was actually there to see it, the magic pope who turned into a robot for some reason, is killed off pretty unceremoniously. Also things seem to just get more confusing when the bad guy’s intended killing blow doesn’t really kill the nun despite aiming for her head, but actually wakes her up and just makes the dragon lady choke her more. What the fuck even was supposed to happen there? Well, apparently whatever happened was undone with Azalie killing herself with a big ass sword, thwarting those plans forever and finally resolving all of her nonsense, which hopefully means this show is now over. And with that, barring a Season Review, I have officially fulfilled my duties of reviewing this show.
