English Dub Review: Saga of Tanya the Evil “How to Use a Victory”

We wrap the first season of Tanya with a killer finale.

Saga of Tanya the Evil season 1 concludes with “How to Use a Victory.” During “Resistance,” Republic forces continue to oppose the Empire despite the Imperial military dominance. As “How to Use a Victory” opens, Tanya Degurechaff (Monica Rial) is not found celebrating the major military victory with her comrades. Rather, she seeks a military strategist from the high command to deliver a warning.

Despite recent victories, Tanya implores her fellow Imperial officers to heed her advice. While a little celebration is fine, the war is far from over. The Empire benefits from logical officers in their strategic command, and Tanya even dubs them a think tank. But Tanya admits that their logical approach is a downfall. It’s a lack of logic that she’s witnessed repeatedly, and that perpetuates the war. Although seemingly outmatched, opposing forces will continue to attack the Empire in spite of previous downfalls.

The first half of “How to Use a Victory” is decidedly slower in pace. It’s mostly dialogue-driven which offers a refreshing dynamic. Although steady and chock full of dialogue, it’s far from boring. The latter half sets up a potential season 2. Though there’s a slight lull and apparent victory for the Empire, Republic forces gather and vow to continue fighting. Anson Sioux’s daughter, Mary, joins the United States force. It’s revealed that Mary Sioux possesses Being X’s power, and her goal is clearly vengeance for her father’s death.

I enjoyed the steady pacing of “How to Use a Victory.” Additionally, I really appreciated its structure and narrative. There’s a slight wrap up of previous threads and additional setup of future plots. Notably, a face-off between Tanya and Mary could be fascinating. Plus, there’s the continued question of Tanya’s fate and Being X’s control. It’s the final moments of the episode, the usual post-credits teaser, that’s so fascinating. Tanya speaks to her troops and exclaims that it’s not God, but man, that holds the true power influence mankind.

Saga of Tanya the Evil swooped in as one of my favorite anime series. Season 1 featured a compelling narrative, a steampunk aesthetic, and engaging alternate history. “How to Use a Victory” is a fitting conclusion so a superb season.
