English Dub Review: Rent-a-Girlfriend “Dream and Girlfriend”

Overview:

Kazuya goes to see Chizuru’s play. There’s a famous director coming to scout new talent. So Chizuru is definitely going to be chosen right?

Our Take:

I have such a love/hate relationship with Rent-a-Girlfriend because I really wanted to like it. I was reading The Quintessential Quintuplets manga and it was suggested by fans of that so I gave it a try. The series has some okay highs but some of the worst lows you’ll ever see. Luckily, season two seems to be smack dab in the middle of one of the decently high points.

The main issue with the series is the main character Kazuya. If you can’t at least tolerate the main character there are going to be problems. Kazuya is insufferable, to say the least, the only redeeming factor for the character is that in the English dub he’s voiced by Aleks Le who has become one of my favorites. Even with him though… I think it’s going to be tough.

This is my first experience with the dub, I watched it all subbed so I was getting the cast list and was excited for Aleks. I’ll admit Lizzie Freeman doesn’t quite match how I imagined Chizuru but as I said this is my first experience with the dub and I imagine she will grow on me.

I don’t have super high hopes for this anime but somehow it managed to get a season two so it must be doing something right. It has decent animation and the voice work is good, but the story itself is just too repetitive. I know rom-coms are known for going nowhere fast but this series really takes the cake for spinning its wheels.
