English Dub Review: Overlord “The Ruler of Conspiracy”

Overview

While Albedo and the others make their moves toward world domination, Ainz has his own little plan. He wants to cultivate true adventurers to explore the unknown, like the players in Yggdrasil. His recruitment efforts bring him to the Baharuth Empire where he makes his presence known in a very big way…

Our Take

Picking up from the last episode, it was a hilarious twist of Ainz to go up against a fight in the Baharuth Coliseum and was nice seeing Ains’ perspective which basically shows what he was doing while all that was happening, along with the events leading up to it. I’ve always found it funny (and surprisingly not repetitive) how everyone around Ainz keeps overthinking every one of his moves and Jirchiv freaking out and even cheering against Ainz within earshot also gave me a good laugh.

Jircniv hilariously assumes Ainz is one step ahead of his underhanded schemes when in reality he just so happened to be there not knowing what sinister intentions Jircniv was planning to begin with. In combination with this, It’s the same with that “magic book” scene and the old man. Ainz just gives him some magic-sounding book to peek at and it’s like the secrets of the universe. And we do get the introduction of a weapons dealer named “Osk” and a cross-dressing Rabbit person who seems weirdly interesting.

Overall, I loved this episode. I had high expectations for this fight, as I imagined it would be something more balanced and have more action scenes, but I forgot how strong Ainz is. I even loved how Jircniv thinks he has seen through all his plans when it was just a mere coincidence he showed up when the meeting was taking place. In a weird way, it’s strangely relevant in this day and age too. Sometimes, society likes to think that politicians always have their shit together and have incredibly Machiavellian schemes yet in reality they’re mostly just winging it like we are. We also got introduced to rune magic which could play a significant role in later storylines.
