English Dub Review: Overlord: “Frost Dragon Lord”

Overview

The Clan Lord discovers that Ainz and his group are approaching the royal capital and asks the frost dragons for help. The Dragon Lord sends his son to intercept the party, while Ainz decides to split up the group to confront the Quagoa and Frost dragons…

Our Take

The Quagoa sure are prepared for all invasion and tactics with the Frost Dragons in defense against the dwarves, but when it comes to Ainz, there just ain’t any equal. Surprisingly, the Frost Dragons are just like any other species in general, and for the Frost Dragon Clan Lord Olasird’arc, having his son Hejinmal be out to scout out the enemy’s power, most certainly seeing the elder lich is much of a surprise given his cowardly nature in combination with the desire to be a bookworm unlike the rest of his Dragon Race…

As Ainz and the Dwarf Gondo travel onward to the Frost Dragon City, Ainz’s presence easily overwhelms Olasird’arc and the other Frost Dragons to open up wealth unimaginable, while confirming that everyone else’s submission to Ainz’s authority will be handled by both Aura and Shalltear. It’s clear that the Quagoa won’t easily submit, and what befalls them is a weirdly logical way to make them useful without completely committing genocide towards the Quagoa’s as a whole…

Overall, while this was a good way to bring this particular conflict to a close, it was pretty anti-climatic at how fast it ended in terms of pacing. Whether it was intentional or not, Ainz came across as pretty ruthless in this episode. Moreso, than he did in Season 3’s finale. The animation for Shalltear’s destruction of the Quagoa was pretty awesome despite some of the CGI sticking out like a sore thumb, Also the constant overestimation of Ainz no matter what concerns is just too funny and never gets old. And finally, Demiurge’s face when he thought Ainz had a “10,000-year foresight” was priceless.
